Pillsbury House Theatre

Who We Are

Pillsbury House + Theatre addresses racial equity through Breaking Ice, a multiracial improvisation-based, professional theatre company that creates and performs original shows to address difficult social issues. Breaking Ice promotes justice and equity by instigating dialogue about difficult issues and inspiring our audiences to take action to undo racism and injustice.

What We Do

Through poetry, music, movement, humor and drama, Breaking Ice creates customized performances that bring a fresh, innovative approach to talking about undoing racism. The Breaking Ice company members are all professional artists who have trained extensively in the Breaking Ice performance model. Performing for audiences ranging from employee associations to corporate managers to incoming students at a college, Breaking Ice is often engaged as the keynote or the opening of a conference or major gathering.

Following performances, Breaking Ice company members facilitate a dialogue. Individuals have been inspired to talk openly about the fears, assumptions and prejudices that keep people apart and to brainstorm ideas to change the culture of their workplace, school or community.

Breaking Ice is the recipient of a Leading Lights Diversity Award from the National Multicultural Institute for significant achievements in promoting diversity and inclusion to affect social change and a Nonprofit Mission Award for Anti-Racism Initiative from the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits.
